THE MARITIME Union of Australia has called on the Federal Government to help upgrade Australia’s shipping fleet.

According to the Maritime Union of Australia, the national shipping policy was neglected by the former Howard government.

It was seeking for tax incentives which would boost investment in new ships.

The union also called for other forms of reform, which it said was essential for Australia to recover from the global financial crisis. Specifically, it wanted measures to guard against labour exploitation and tax avoidance.
