Sydney Ports testing its emergency response capabilities

SYDNEY Ports is today staging ‘Exercise Big Dipper’, a simulated oil spill designed to test the port’s emergency response capabilities.

Sydney Ports says ‘Exercise Big Dipper’ involves the scenario of a crude oil tanker running aground at Gore Cove on Sydney Harbour, spilling 40t of crude oil.

According to Sydney Ports, the two day exercise begins as a desktop exercise with a practical one scheduled for 6 November 2009.

The event will test Sydney Ports’ response capability to a ‘Tier 2’ oil spill, defined as a spill of between ten and 1,000t of oil.

About 30 Sydney Ports marine operations personnel will be involved in the exercise.
