Sydney ports move record numbers

TRADE through Sydney ports has remained steady, despite the economic downturn.

The first financial quarter of 2008/09 has seen 7.3m mass tonnes of trade moving through the ports, an increase of 0.7% compared to the same period last year.

Total container throughput for year to date (YTD) September 2008/09 was 0.49 million TEU — up 13.2% on the same period last year.

The container trade also reached a record high in September 2008, with more than 165 000 TEU, up 12.8% from the previous year. This was driven primarily by higher container movements through China, New Zealand and the United States.

Total full container imports increased by 11.3%. The leading importers were East Asia, Europe and South East Asia, which combined accounted for 76% of total full container imports through Sydney.

Total full exports jumped by 20.5%. Sydney ports exported high amounts of timber, machinery and transport equipment, cereals and chemical products, but agricultural products are on the decline, primarily due to the drought.

*TEU is a twenty foot long unit of measurement
