Swire to consider increasing compensation after Albanese meeting

SWIRE Shipping is believed to be considering increasing its offer of compensation for the Moreton Bay oil spill after yesterday’s meeting with Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese.

The clean up bill is now reported to be $31 million.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh rejected the company's renewed compensation offer of $20 million in a meeting last Wednesday.

Albanese met Swire Shipping representatives in Canberra yesterday, where it was announced the company could now be considering a revised compensation bid which will be resolved in the next few days.

A report into the March oil spill due out this week may open the way to changing laws which allow Swire Shipping to limit how much compensation it contributes to the clean-up.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is due to release a report by Friday on the spill which includes a review of Australia's liability regime in relation to ship-sourced pollution.

A spokesman for Transport Minister Rachel Nolan said the Queensland State Government will continue to push for full compensation in every forum it participates in.
