Swire confirms $25 million final payment for oil slick clean-up

QUEENSLAND Premier Anna Bligh has welcomed Swire Shipping's belated agreement to pay $25 million towards the clean-up cost of the oil slick caused by its Pacific Adventurer cargo ship.

The total bill was approximately $31 million, which the company initially stated it would pay.

The shortfall will be met by increasing environmental levies on shipping companies.

In March, The Pacific Adventurer cargo ship spilt 270 thousand litres of fuel oil on South East Queensland’s shores during Cyclone Hamish.

It has complained that due to the oil slick, sales have suffered, fishermen have lost gear and lucrative fishing grounds have been lost.

But the Queensland Seafood Industry Association has announced it is still taking independent legal action against Swire.
