North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation proposes new Abbot Point harbour development

NORTH Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBPC) has proposed a $1.25b Abbot Point harbour development which will be capable of handling different cargoes from large vessels.

The Queensland government claims it is currently beginning environmental investigations into the project, turning Abbot Point into an ‘industrial powerhouse’.

According to the government, the NQBPC wants to build the shipping facility on around 320 hectares of reclaimed land.

The government says the project will handle a number of different exports or shiploads of raw materials for mineral processing.

The NQBPC's Abbot Point Multi Cargo Facility Project includes 12 shipping berths, a tug harbour, dredged access channel, swing basin and berth pockets.
