Newcastle Port could be home to LNG plant, export hub

NSW coal seam gas producers are in discussion with Newcastle Port to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant.

The coal harbour would potentially be used as a second east coast export hub, producers have said.

A Newcastle Port Corporation (NPC) spokesman confirmed there had been "very preliminary" discussions with more than one party about building LNG plants at the harbour.

Eastern Star Gas has stepped up as one of the parties that had approached the port.

Eastern Star managing director David Casey said the plans are still in the initial phases but has confirmed its interest in possibilities at Newcastle Port.
