Mariana Express launches Shanghai-Darwin shipping service

A NEW shipping service between Darwin and China commenced yesterday when a freighter carrying 600 containers docked at Fort Hill Wharf.

Singapore-based Mariana Express will run a Shanghai-Taiwan-Townsville-Darwin circuit every fortnight.

Mariana said there were hopes the service could soon be increased to weekly due to Darwin’s great potential for growth.

Ships will take nine days to sail between Darwin and Shanghai.

Chief Minister Paul Henderson announced that Darwin is the gateway to Asia and Asia's gateway to Australia and the new service is a sign of confidence in the country’s ports and economy.

The Federal Government put $50 million towards the job.

Mariana Express has eight ships, capable of carrying from 700 to 1100 containers.
