THE RACE to establish Gladstone as a major production point for liquefied natural gas will continue with Santos/Petronas, LNG Ltd and Arrow Energy all in the running.
The Santos/Petronas consortium is one of the most advanced of the proponents for manufacturing LNG from coal seam gas at a plant proposed to be built on Curtis Island.
The partnership has lodged a draft environmental impact statement with the state government.
Santos also owns a stake in the Exxon Mobil led LNG project in Papua New Guinea and has declared its priority is to expand its LNG business and target opportunities across Asia.
Meanwhile LNG Ltd and its partner Arrow energy has had its environmental impact statement approved by the state government.
LNG plans to build an initial 1.5 million tonnes plant at Fisherman's Landing on the mainland.
The company said last week it was getting closer to starting work on the site and was working closely with the Gladstone Ports Corporation to make that happen.
The company hopes to be there by October.
Speculation that a two million tonnes-a-year deal done by Oil Search and Exxon-Mobil may delay efforts in Gladstone, has done little to slow those considering the city as a site to convert coal seam gas to LNG.
