Govt plans to tighten security at national ports

THE Federal Government has announced it will introduce legislation next year to enhance security at national ports.

According to the government, the new legislation will consolidate existing laws and brings them into alignment.

Attorney-General Robert McClelland says the new regime will provide a clear and simple set of maritime enforcement powers.

Currently there are 35 separate federal laws governing maritime security and there is inconsistency amongst them.
