Community facilities separated from Port of Brisbane sell-off

THE QUEENSLAND State Government has announced it will separate the sale of the Port of Brisbane (POB) from community facilities.

The announcement was welcomed by Queensland boat owners and marine industry representatives, who were concerned the sale would send rents at boat harbours soaring.

Treasurer Andrew Fraser said marinas and boat leases at Manly, Scarborough and Shorncliffe boat harbours were legacy community facilities which, for historical reasons, have been in the ownership and management of the Port of Brisbane (POB) Corporation.

Fraser said the community facilities were obviously not core business of a major containerised trading port and therefore it is ideal for these facilities to operate as community facilities into the future and be excluded from the sale process.

Marine Queensland's general manager, Don Jones, said the POB owned boat harbours and other land and facilities that it leased to clubs, tourism operators, marinas, boat builders and the maintenance industry.
