Australia calls for greater maritime pollution compensation

THE federal government has called for greater maritime pollution compensation.

The announcement comes following the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Anthony Albanese addressed the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) General Assembly in London.

“I took the opportunity to impress on the global shipping community the importance of lifting the existing compensation liability limits,” Albanese says.

“It is important that the polluter pay for the damage they cause.”

The federal government claims the inadequacy of the existing compensation regime was exposed by the Pacific Adventurer accident off the Queensland coast earlier this year.

The IMO will consider the Australian proposal next year.
