Albanese, Swire Shipping meet to discuss clean up cost

THE FEDERAL Government will meet in Canberra today with Swire Shipping, the company responsible for the south-east Queensland oil slick in March this year.

The Swire-owned cargo ship, Pacific Adventurer, spilt more than 270,000 litres of fuel oil onto Moreton and Bribie islands and the Sunshine Coast.

The Queensland Government has already it expressed it wants Swire to pay the full clean-up costs from the incident, totalling around $31 million.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh last week rejected Swire's latest offer, which the company said was more than its legal requirement of $14.5 million.

The shipping company will meet with Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese to discuss its latest compensation offer for the clean-up of the spill.
