Activists arrested after Queensland Coal Port protest

TWO climate change protestors have been arrested in Brisbane after putting their hands into a conveyor belt loading coal onto a Taiwanese ship.

The couple were among four Six Degrees activists who jumped the fence at the Queensland Coal Port and locked themselves to a metal pipe near the conveyor belt.

Six Degrees says 16 other protestors delayed coal ship Formosabulk No.4 for several hours.

According to Six Degrees, the ship was carrying 90,000t of Queensland coal which would lead to emission of about 180,000t of carbon dioxide.

Six Degrees claims although increasing coal exports generates wealth, it does not provide environmental benefits.

The organisation says the government should make plans to move Queensland from coal to a more sustainable economy, which will protect jobs and protect the environment.
